Atlantic Equipment Company's history parallels the development of the City of Miami. Incorporated in 1946 at 1220 North Miami Avenue, Atlantic occupied that premises for 20 years. In 1966, they were forced to relocate to 800 North Miami Avenue for the construction of the I-395 expressway. Twenty years later, they had to give up that site for the construction of the Miami Arena.

The painting represents Atlantic's history, from it's origin on Lower Broadway, New York, to the three locations in Florida. Atlantic's extensive trade with Caribbean and overseas markets is portrayed by the islands in the sea, while the helicopter is a reminder of a crash landing on their roof in 1981. Murray Lipinsky's decision to enter the family business after serving in the Armed Forces is represented by the picture of a GI.

Featured at the top of the picture is a tarpon, Atlantic's good luck emblem, which has hung over the firm's front door since its inception.
